Are there any gay surfers? Ed Aldridge says there’s him and about two or three other blokes. Aldridge should know, having spent the better part of a year scouring Australia to find enough openly queer board jockeys to populate Tan Lines, his hilarious account of an adolescent struggling to come out (to himself) and exit a randy little island community just offshore from Sydney. On the new DVD (TLA), Aldridge’s jocular commentary provides answers to such questions as why so many 16-year-old straight-identified surfer boys were willing to be gay for precious little pay, why there are so few surfing scenes in the movie, and finally, why so much bloody tea-pouring?

Tan Lines is a coming of age and coming out tale with a difference. A low budget, Australian indie flick, it has at its heart a basic storyline but Ed Aldridge, the film’s writer, producer, cinematographer and director, adds enough quirky and surreal moments to the mix to make it – like its lead character – stand out from the crowd.

The first feature from producer, director, screenwriter and cinematographer Ed Aldridge, “Tan Lines” mixes up the teenage coming-out formula with typical Aussie humor, sexy/romantic elements and absurdist fillips, to mostly bracing effect. Smart, appealing, slightly uneven pic is a natural for the gay fest (and specialty DVD) circuit, with niche theatrical sales possible despite DV lensing.
